Seriously, I am SO excited about this.
For years I've battled with jean designers and their refusal to acknowledge that everyone is not 5' 8" tall. Gap made a feeble attempt to accommodate women of different heights with their "lengths"- Regular, Long, and Ankle. Unfortunately Regular is too long, and Ankle length SEEM ok until you wash the jeans once and they shrink up above your shoe line. Not cool.
So, about 8 months ago I had to replace my "nice" jeans because I had shredded up the dragging bottoms. Kara and I went to Nordstroms and fell in love with the same exact jeans. Alas, they were very long. "Fear Not!" said Nordstroms. "We will hem jeans for free!" Sold. When the seamstress arrived at the dressing room and began pinning my jeans, she asked me if I wanted to keep the original hem. Huh?? That is even an option?? My mom used to hem my jeans but the new hemline never lived up to the nice, scrunched and worn look of the original hem. I had no idea it was even possible to keep the original hem when hemming jeans. The idea was magical. However, keeping the original hem would cost $15 and I am a cheapskate, so opted out of that. Since then the idea of keep the original hem has mystified me. Thus, it made it onto my list of 101 things to do.
This week at work, I googled "How to hem jeans and keep the original hem." This beauty popped up in my results:

3 steps- really, that is it. It amazes me how easy it was. I did 2 pairs of jeans in 20 minutes, and Martha Stewart I am NOT. I feel like a success when I can get my sewing machine threaded without drawing any blood. So believe me when I say it's really possible for anyone to do this. AND you really, really can't tell unless you look super duper close. I'm in love.

I feel your pain! ankle length is always to long for me. Yes i could do petite but i am vain and refuse to go up a size plus ankle length is still the same as petite... i have gotten pants hemmed before and learned i could get the original hem put back on... it was like christmas!
ReplyDeleteWow that's great, thanks! I may seem tall but it's an illusion, my legs are super short and I am forever trashing the bottom of my pants. I will try this next time I get a fancy new pair of jeans.
ReplyDeletei tried this..and i sucked at it. i'm totally blaming the jeans on this one ;)
